On Friday Paul and I went to Joyride150 in Markham. It is an
indoor mtb park with an xc loop, wooden ‘dirt’ jumps in beginner,
intermediate and expert levels, pump tracks, log/ladder
obstacles, bmx areas, and jumps into a foam pit.
They normally open at 3 on weekdays. I emailed the day before,
and since we were coming in from afar, they opened the place at
noon for us. We rented bikes. At first we tried xc bikes and
did the xc course. 15 minutes later we were back for different
bikes. They were hardtails with an 80mm fork, single speed with
the seat height as low as the rear wheel. Over the next few
hours we learned to do the ‘beginner’ dirt jumps. They also
have intermediate and expert dirt jumps. We also learned to ride
the pump track at speed. It is a course with humps that you
pump with your arms and legs. No pedaling. 4 humps on the
straights with a tall 180 corner on each end.
By the time we left there were 150 riders using the park. Some
really good riders. I witnessed a backflip, and Paul saw a
Superman. There was a guy who rode the pump track in a figure 8
– by jumping over the middle section.
The owner of Joyride 150 actually recognized me since we both
race Master 1 category road and we talked about how we both like
to get people on bikes. He donated some swag for our grade 6+
mtb event.
